The new OneDrive API

Earlier this year Microsoft released a new OneDrive API, which allows us to integrate OneDrive into our apps so we can store and manage data across all major platforms, including Windows, the web, iOS, and Android. Thanks to this new application we can use a cloud storage platform which is available to users across the entire Microsoft consumer services family.

The OneDrive API is said to be a foundation for further evolution of the platform, to enable us full access to functionality of OneDrive. Its new, interesting features include the following:

  • ability to retrieve changes to files and folders to keep a large set of files in sync with minimal calls
  • resumable uploads of files up to 10 GB via file-fragment uploading for working with rich content, like HD videos
  • customizable file thumbnail images for delivering a more integrated experience across your app and OneDrive

And this is just a beginning, Microsoft experts are still working on more improvements and helpful features to be released throughout the year 2015. I can’t wait to see what else they have in store for us! Stay tuned for more updates.

Windows 10

Windows 10 release date revealed

It is said that the long awaited Windows 10 will be released late July, 2015. As Microsoft endorse it itself “Windows 10 isn’t for all of us, but for each of us”. This time around development of new OS is different than ever before. Microsoft is using valuable feedback provided by millions of people, which is to help shape the future of Windows.

Windows 10 feels familiar, simple navigation means that we don’t need to spend time learning new ways. In addition, we won’t have to worry about being up-to-date with the latest features or security updates, as Windows will automatically deliver – directly to your device – all updates as soon as they become available. The Store in Windows 10 will offer hundreds of thousands of apps including games, music, videos and a new version of Office.

A recent Microsoft update starts prompting Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to ‘reserve’ their free Windows 10 upgrade, but for our customers we would recommend NOT TO follow the wizard yet, since Windows 10 has not been tested on their network or with their software. Deploying Windows 10 without compatibility testing could cause major problems on the company network. We’ll make every attempt to block that patch from distribution (for customers who use our Managed Services) in order to avoid additional charges necessary for us to troubleshoot or fix problems later on.

Follow the tips provided below and stay connected to see what’s new in the IT world.

  1. Do not click on the upgrade prompt in the lower right corner (it appears as a Start button icon in the notification area on your taskbar):  w10

  1. However, if you do so, please don’t follow the wizard below (just close the window). If you have already followed this wizard, after July 29 you will receive a prompt to install Windows 10. DO NOT install it at that time.

  1. Please forward this information to all staff.

Clutter

Monday morning, you run into your office not to be late again, turn on your computer and go straight to your mailbox. Still half asleep you watch those incoming messages grow in number, reaching dozens, if not hundreds by the time you finish sipping your first coffee. And then you need to prioritize them, sort them by subject or sender, whatever works for you. So you scroll down the long list of messages to check what needs to be done asap, what can be put aside for a short while and what needs to be discarded. Sounds familiar? I bet it does. We all go through that same routine almost every day.

Luckily for us Microsoft Outlook has added a new feature recently that helps filter low-priority emails, thus saving time for the most important ones. It is called Clutter.

Clutter analyzes our activity in the past and determines which messages we are most likely to discard. These e-mails are moved to folder called, surprisingly, Clutter so we can check them at our convenience. If Clutter gets something wrong – as sometimes it might – we can just move the message to our inbox and Clutter will take notice. You can help Clutter learn your preferences faster: if you see a message that was sent to Clutter by mistake, right-click the message and choose Move to inbox. It works the other way around as well: if you see a low priority email in your Inbox, right-click the message and choose Move to Clutter. The thing with Clutter is that the longer we use it, the better it gets because it learns from us. Good news is also that moving an message in or out of the Clutter folder, from any of your devices, works for all of your devices, you don’t need to do this individually in each app.

Clutter can be turned off at any time, if we are not satisfied with the helps it provides. It’s a simple solution and I must admit it already save me some time this morning.

In my case Clutter was turned on automatically, but if you need to take action to turn it on, just follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to Outlook Web App.
  2. At the top of the page, select Outlook (or Mail) or select the App launcher , and then select Outlook.
  3. Go to Settings >Options>Mail>Automatic processing > Clutter.
  4. Choose Separate items identified as Clutter.
  5. Click  Save to save your changes, or  Discard to cancel.

Office 365 features

As of July 14, 2015 Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows Server 2003 R2 and this undoubtedly marks the end of an IT era. But what will this mean for you?

Basically, it means that Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for that operating system. Websites will be at risk from crashes, system downtime and security holes. Mission-critical business applications could also be at risk. So if you are still running Windows Server 2003 the sooner you take steps to plan and implement a migration strategy the better. Migrating to Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft Azure or Office 365 will bring you tangible benefits, such as improved performance, protected infrastructure and many more. Today I want to focus on some features available with the Microsoft Office 365.

OneDrive for Business is online storage intended for business purposes only, it’s a place where you can store, sync and share your work data. It lets you update and share files from anywhere and work on Office documents with others at the same time.

All files that you store in OneDrive for Business are private unless you decide to share them. Furthermore, when you send e-mail from Outlook Web App, you can attach an OneDrive for Business file as a link, instead of sending an attachment. This automatically allows the people you send the message to permission to edit your file. In addition you save space in everyone’s mailbox and encourage people to edit the same copy of your file.

Sharepoint is as a secure place to store, organize, share, and access information from almost any device. All you need is a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox. With this cloud-based service your employees can create sites to share documents and information with co-workers, partners and customers.

Skype for Business is a tool that you may be quite familiar with already. If you use commercial version of Skype to stay in touch with friends and family in your life away from work, you’ll appreciate the power and simplicity of Skype for Business where it’s easy to find and connect with co-workers. And if you’re coming to Skype for Business from Lync, you’ll recognize all of the features you already use but in a fresh new interface with simplified controls and some great new additions, such as:

  • New look and feel
  • Call from Skype for Business using your desk phone for audio
  • Integration with the Skype directory
  • Call Monitor
  • Rate My Call
  • Quick access to call controls
  • Emoticons

Now you can get everything you need for conversations in one app – IM, audio and video calls, online meetings and sharing. It enables you to meet with up to 250 people – even if they’re not on Skype for Business, all they need is a phone or Internet connection. And because Skype for Business and Office work together, it’s simple to collaborate right from your Office apps.

E-mail encryption enables you to deliver confidential business communications with enhanced security, allowing users to send and receive encrypted e-mail as easily as regular email directly from their desktops. Messages can be encrypted without complex hardware and software to purchase, configure, or maintain, which helps to minimize capital investment and mitigate messaging risks.

Office 365 ProPlus will let you enjoy the latest version of MS Office applications across PCs, Macs, Windows tablets, iPad® and Android™ tablets, as well as most mobile devices. Each user can install Office on up to 5 devices: PCs or Macs, 5 tablets and 5 phones. Users can create and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote files via a web browser and collaborate with co-workers in real-time to ease collaboration. Furthermore, there is no need to pay for upgrades as all updates are included in your subscription.
